Hattin lasted less than a year as licensee. |

WESTERN TIMES, 1 July 1890
A fire broke out about 8.15 am on Saturday at the Seven Stars Hotel, St. Thomas. It occurred in a bedroom in the upper part of the house, which had been occupied during the night by two Artillerymen who were billeted at the hotel. The discovery was made by Mrs. Hattin, wife of the landlord of the hotel, who noticed smoke coming from upstairs. She apprised her husband, who immediately sent a messenger to the headquarters of the St. Thomas Fire Brigade. Mr. Churchward, the Surveyor, then communicated with the men, and within a very few minutes they were at the scene of the fire with their appliances. Captain Farrant was present, and under his direction a quantity of hose was connected with the hydrants, and there being a plentiful supply of water the fire was extinguished within twnty minutes. The amount of destruction could not be estimated exactly, but most of the damage was caused by fire. The property belongs tro St. Anne's Well Brewery, and Mr. Hattin has his stock insured with the Caledonian Office.
