In 1891 at the licensing session of February 1891 the Criterion Inn was described as having a very rough class of trade, and a previous landlord seemed to have lost all control of the Inn, following the arrival of two batteries of Artillery from India, who frequented the house. Hattin lasted less than a year as licensee.
