He was buried with his brother Alfred in St Swithuns. He was a native of Morchard Bishop, but had lived for more than 50 years in Sandford, and 6 years at Ashford Marshall, near Barnstaple. He enjoyed a high reputation as a thoroughgoing agriculturalist, and was a well-known judge at numerous shows, including those of Young Farmers' Clubs. He had held office as the President of both the Crediton and Coppldestone Fat Stock Societies. Of a generous nature he was always ready to assist good causes.A loyal Churchman he worshipped regularly at the Parish Church. In politics he was a staunch Conservative and was one of the original members of Sandford and District Conservative Club. | ||

His stock was much sought after by dealers and butchers. Mr. Hattin was an attendant at the Parish Church. During the funeral service blinds were drawn in the village. The esteem in which he was held was evidenced by the large numbers of farmers and tradesmen attending the church and graveside." Mr. Louis Hatten, undertaker, Sandford, was responsible for the funeral arrangements. Helmore and Sons on 18th July 1887, would be selling by auction at the Ship Hotel, Crediton, the two highly productive and valuable estates called East and West Pidsley, now in the occupation of Mr.William Hattin and others.
Having superior dwelling houses and farm homesteads adjoining the high road about two miles from the town of Sandford and four from Crediton Railway Station.
The Estates are very productive and healthy, pleasantly situated, with a southern aspect, very compact, and in the heart of good sporting country, near the meets of two packs of Foxhounds, and are well deserving the attention of capitalists. The whole estate is beautifully wooded and contains about three acres of woodland. The land tax is redeemed.
