He was buried with his brother Alfred in St Swithuns. He was a native of Morchard Bishop, but had lived for more than 50 years in Sandford, and 6 years at Ashford Marshall, near Barnstaple. He enjoyed a high reputation as a thoroughgoing agriculturalist, and was a well-known judge at numerous shows, including those of Young Farmers' Clubs. He had held office as the President of both the Crediton and Coppldestone Fat Stock Societies. Of a generous nature he was always ready to assist good causes.A loyal Churchman he worshipped regularly at the Parish Church. In politics he was a staunch Conservative and was one of the original members of Sandford and District Conservative Club.

12 September 1930

The Church Sunday School Children, numbering about 50, were entertained to tea at Blackhayes, thriough the kindness of Mr. and Miss Hattin. Sports were held with prizes. During the evening, bananas, sweets and oranges were freely given by Mr. Hattin. Gramophone selections were played, and hymns were sung on leaving. Mr. Horrocks proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. and Miss Hattin for their generosity, the evening being a most enjoyable one.

Individual Note 2

Charles and Mary Jane Hattin hosted a whist drive arranged by the Sandford and Upton Hellions Constitutional Club, at Blackhayes House, on Wednesday 24 June 1931. The gathering were entertained to refreshments by the generosity of the hosts.

SANDFORD AND DISTRICT SICK NURSING FUNDS AUGMENTED

Sandford and Upton Hellions District Sick Nursing funds were greatly augmented, when, by the permission of Mr. C. Hattin and Miss Hattin a largely attended whict drive was held on the lawn of their residence at "Blackhayes", Sandford. There were 35 tables in play. Mr. Hattin gave all the prizes, some being of silver, and Miss Hattin gave all the refreshments.

Fine weather prevailed and large numbers came from Crediton and many miles around the district. The duties of M.C. were discharged by Mr. James Daw of Sandford. Miss Hattin presented prizes to the winners. The refreshments were in charge of Miss Hattin, asisted by Mesdames W.H. Perriman, W.O.Snell, E.C.Harries, W.Sing, Clarke, Earnshaw, J.Wright and others.

Tuesday 26 April 1938, at Sandford Parochial Church Council, when the condition of the church bells was discussed, it was stated they badle needed rehanging. Estimates had been obtained for the work and materials, that would cost nearly £400 and they would have to find some way of raising the funds. At this point it was announced that Mr. Charles Hattin and Miss Mary Jane Hattin of Blackhayes had consented to provide the church with and extra bell (treble) at the cost of £51 10s.

On Saturday 9 December 1950 the Bishop of Creditgon attended a special service at Sandford Parish Church for the rededication of the restored bells, after rehanging and extensive repairs to the church tower and the dedication of an additional treble bell given by the late Miss M.J.Hattin
