Biography
Born 1900 Tonbridge Kent
Stephen Lamplugh was born in Tonbridge, Kent, England early in 1896. [1] He was a son of George William Lamplugh a geologist and his wife Hannah Maria Headley.
Four Siblings 1901 Tonbridge Kent
In 1901 all four surviving children of George and Hannah Lamplugh were with them in Tonbridge Kent. Stephen was the baby, under one year old. [2]
Schoolboy 1911 St Albans
Stephen is only 10 and at school. His father George William Lamplugh has been married to Hannah Maria for 23 years in 1911 and of their 5 children 4 survive. George's grandfather was a gentleman farmer and his father was an ironmonger, but George is well into the modern world as District Geologist for St Albans Hertfordshire. [3]
Marriage 1938 West Country
Stephen seems to have delayed marriage until 1938, when he married Mary Vesey in the Wincanton area on the borders of Devon and Somerset. This location, near Salisbury Plain probably relates to Stephen's employment as officer in the Anti-aircraft Brigade which would practice there. [4] They have one daughter.
Start of WW2 1939
Stephen Lamplugh seems to have spent World War Two rising in rank through the Anti-Aircraft sector of the British Army starting in Whitton Barracks Lichfield where we find his wife in the General Register alongside many others, and ending in 1945 in command of the entire sector as temporary Major General. [5] [6]
Retirement 1953
Stephen Lamplugh is given the CBE (Commander of the British Empire Medal) on his retirement [7]
Death 1983 Salisbury
Stephen dies in Salisbury in 1983 within a few weeks of his 83rd birthday. [8]
