| Suddon Grange Western Gazette Friday 23 November 1945 PIONEER IN CLEAN MILK Mr A.H.Vesey Dies At Wincanton The death occurred on Thursday last week of Mr. Arthur Henry Vesey, of Suddon Grange, Wincanton, who was well known as a pioneer in clean milk production. Mr.Vesey, who was 78 years of age, went as a young man to the United States of America, and, returning to this country, farmed for some years at Stowell House, near Templecombe, where he had a herd of pedigree Shorthorns. He then went to Suddon Grange where he changed his herd to pedigree Guernseys, and it was with this herd that he introduced new methods of milk production. He was one of the first to produce bottled T.T.milk; a film was taken of his methods for showing in cinemas, and medical and sanitary experts visited his farm. In later years Mr. Vesey gave up milk production and turned his attention to the production of prime Devon beef. He leaves a wife, one son, the Rev. A.L.Vesey (rector of Wickham, Hants), and a daughter, Mrs. Lamplugh, wife of Brigadier Stephen Lamplugh, serving in Paiforce. One son, a Naval officer, was lost at sea before the war, and another son, who under the name of Ernest Lewis, was a writer of nature books died some ten or twelve years ago. The remains were cremated and the ashes interred in Stowell parish churchyard on Tuesday, where the Rev. A. L. Vesey officiated. The private mourners were Mrs. Vesey (wife), Mrs. Lamplugh (daughter) and Mrs. A.L.Vesey (daughter-in-law). Many friends also attended. |

| Ernest Lewis was the pen-name of Ernest Blakeman Vesey. A keen sportsman, naturalist and animal lover who wrote a number of animal-themed novels featuring dogs, foxes and birds and also one featuring a horse. He had a short and rather tragic life. He was blind in one eye and later lost an arm in a motor accident. After his accident he undertook physically demanding research for his books to prove that he was not impaired at all by his disability: including travelling to Iceland (which resulted in his book In Search of the Gyr-Falcon) and learning about guide dog training for his book about a German Shepherd guide-dog, Beowulf. He died on the 23rd of January, 1937, aged only twenty-nine. | Records from the 1931 Napier earthquake confirm that Lieutenant Ernest Blakeman Vesey was a key participant in the immediate rescue operations. Serving aboard the sloop HMS Veronica, he was part of the first group of Royal Navy personnel to respond when the disaster struck on 3 February 1931. Navy General Board Navy General Board +3 Role in the Napier Rescue Immediate Response: HMS Veronica had berthed in Port Ahuriri only three hours before the earthquake. When the quake hit, the seafloor rose, leaving the ship aground, but the crew immediately sent radio signals for help—the first news of the disaster to reach the outside world.On-the-Ground Action: Vesey and his fellow "Bluejackets" spread out into the flattened city to fight fires, pull survivors from the wreckage of collapsed buildings, and provide emergency medical treatment. Official Recognition: The "outstanding service" of the officers and crew was later commemorated by the Veronica Sunbay memorial on Napier’s Marine Parade. The ship's bell is still held at the Hawke's Bay Museum as a symbol of this bond. +4 |
