In April 1916 the Crediton Gas Company made its first application for the exemption of Sydney Madge from military service. He had been passed for home service only. He had considerable knowledge of the manufacture of sulphate of ammomia. He was granted six month's exemption. In December 1916 the further application of the Crediton Gas Company for an exemption from military sedrvice for Sydney John Madge was adjourned as a medical examination was scheduled for him. At the next hearing, after he had been passed physically C2, it was stated that he had special knowledge of the manufacture of sulphate of ammonia. The company admitted they had lost no men to military service yet but the company was small and worked with minimum staff. The military asked that the application be refused as the man might be used as a substitute for a general serviceman elsewhere. The application was refused. He served in the Inland Waterways branch of the Royal Engineers but was discharged for health reasons in 1917.
The Western Times, Thursday Aug 16th 1912:
HELPING THEMSELVES
Theft of Cider from a Store at Crediton
There was a crowd at Crediton Petty Sessions yesterday, when five men, all from Crediton, were summoned for stealing a quantity of cider, stored near the railway station on the premises of Messrs. Harper and Co., cider merchants of Stroud on the 14th June. The defendants were Sidney J Madge, William Luxton, James Roach, Fredk. Rowden, and William Chamberlain. Mr. W.H.Tarbet, of Exeter, appeared to prosecute, while Mr. Linford-Brown (Exeter) represented the three defendants Roach, Rowden and Chamberlain. Mr. Tarbet detailed the facts of the case, explaining how the men had been caught by prosecutor. The men really had no right in the cider store at all. There was a great difference in the gravity of the offences. Whereas Luxton and Madge were seen actually taking the cider away in jars, the other three only had a glass of cider each given them by Madge, who was in charge. He asked the Bench if they would be good enough to allow the cases against Roach, Rowden, and Chamberlain to be withdrawn, for he sure that the ends of justice had been met by the publicity that had been given to their action. Continuing he said that the firm entered into the prosecution with no vindictive feelings. Everything possible was done to avoid criminal proceedings. Notices warning the men not to touch the cider were posted up at different places, and it was also stated on these notices that if they did take any they would be dismissed.
Mr. Linford-Brown said he was obliged to Mr. Tarbet for the course he had taken with regard to his clients. They had the permission of the man in charge and they had simply taken a glass of cider each.
Richard Lee Roach, senr., farmer, and manager at the stores for Messrs. Harper and Co., bore out Mr. Tarbet's statement. Madge had been in his employment for five or six years. On the 14th June witness secreted himself on the premises, and the men thought he had gone to Exeter. At about 9.45 a.m. Madge was in charge. Luxton came in first, and drank two glasses of cider thinking that nobody saw him do it. He went out of the store and came back again at 9.55, when he was carrying a jar, afterwards filling it with cider and taking it away. At 10.15 Madge also came in and filled a jar. Luxton came at 10.30, carrying a larger jar than before. It was too large to go underneath the tap, so Madge filled a bucket, subsequently putting the cider in the jar. Luxton, before he went away, had another glass to drink --(laughter). Witness followed Luxton and took the jar from him. He said he was very sorry and would not do it again. Witness had repeatedly cautioned the defendants. The value of the cider taken was about 2s.
P.C.Hill, Crediton, deposed to arresting Madge, who after being charged with stealing the cider, said: "I took it and gave it to Luxton. I am very sorry. I should not have been such a fool." Luxton, when arrested, said: "I took the jar and Madge filled it, and when I was going away Mr. Roach stopped me. I would not have had the job happen for a fortune."
Defendants pleaded guilty, and wished to be dealt with by the justices instead of being tried by jury.
The Chairman (Mr.W. Pedlar-Carter) said that with regard to the case of Sidney Madge he was in a position of trust which made his offence much more serious than it would otherwise have been. The Bench had decided to fine him £2 and costs. Luxton would be fined 1s and costs.

STOLE FROM HER FATHER-IN-LAW
Crediton Woman Fined
PLAINT TO POLICE OF
FAMILY’S ACCUSATION
For what was described by Inspr. W.J.Hutchings as a “particularly mean type of theft,” Beatrice Mary Madge, 24, of 17, Bowden-Hill, Crediton, was fined £3 at Crediton yesterday. She had pleaded “Guilty” to stealing £1 and 6s., the property of her father-in-law, Sidney John Madge, night watchman of 33,Exeter-road, Crediton.
Inspr. Hutchings said Mr. Madge was ill in bed, and asked his daughter-in-law to collect a week’s wages due to him. She was handed a pakect containing £3 6s. 3d., and put it in a drawer.
“INJURED INNOCENCE” AIR.
In a statement to P.C. (War Reserve) Conbeer, Mrs. Madge denied the offence, but eventually said her father-in-lawtold her to take the money for some eggs. She took £1 and three 2s. Pieces. She did not buy the eggs, but spent £1 on groceries, and the 6s got mixed up with her husband’s wages. She thought her father-in-law would be put into the Poor-law Institution and that the authorities would have the money. She did not take the money to rob him, but thought it would come in to buy some things if he went to the institution.
Inspr. Hutchings added that Mrs. Madge went to the police station and said that members of the family had accused her of stealing the money. She assumed an air of injured innocence, and was distressed at the thought that she was suspected of theft.
