THE DISCOVERY OF A DEAD BODY.— In connection with the mysterious finding of a dead body in a box in the churchyard, the affair is pretty well brought to light. Enquiries have been made by the police, and they not finding anything to show a light on the mystery, communicated with the coroner in order that an inquest might be held. However, on Wednesday morning a young woman, wife of James Madge, labourer, went with a woman named Lynes, granddaughter of the gravedigger, and Lynes owned the box as one made by her husband. Madge said it was her child ; she could tell only by the embroidery on what was once the arm of the child. On 6th November last Mrs. Madge gave birth to a child, which died before the day expired. A certificate was obtained from the Registrar, and on 9th Susan Madge, mother-in-law of Mrs Madge, and Mrs. Lynes, took the child and a certificate to the grave-digger, at the same time leaving 1s, the fee for burial. It is thus satisfactory to know that the infant’s death was a natural one. The affair has caused quite a sensation, for the pit in which the body was found is not deep enough to reach the box. Unfortunately the grave-digger – who is an old man—is now ill, and no information is forthcoming. A daughter with whom the grave-digger lives says she remembers now the grave being brought. An inquiry will probably be made into the matter.
