BROWNHILLS PETTY SESSIONS
A YOUNG TEACHER:- Mary Martha Smith of The Cottage, Triangle, Chasetown, was charged with an infringement of the Employment of Children Act on September 26th in respect of her daughter, Louisa Dorothy Smith, who was under 14 years of age. – It was stated for the prosecution, that the girl was seen teaching students in dancing at the Chasetown Institute at 8 p.m. on September 26th. The girl was born on November 5th, 1908 and was not 14 until the fifth of next month. Her mother rented the Institute for the purpose of holding dancing classes. At the time was not attending school, and had a doctor’s certificate stating that she was not in a fit condition to do so. – Mr. Haynes (school attendance officer) stated that the girl and another M.C. were leading the dances. He did not, however, see anyone pay for admission. – Defendant stated that during the past ten years she had frequently arranged dances and had rented the Institute for the last three years. She arranged the classes in order to keep the young people out of the streets, but she did not carry them on with the idea of making anything out of them. In fact they were carried on at a loss. Her daughter was not employed as a dancing mistress, but simply went there for pastime. – Louisa Dorothy Smith, daughter of the defendant, stated that she showed no steps at all on that particular evening. – Ivy Reed, New Street, Chasetown, stated on the date in question Mrs. Smith asked her to help with the learners, as her daughter was ill. – Bert Allen said he assisted Mrs. Smith with the classes. The learners attended from 5 to 7 o’clock. Miss Smith did no teaching whatever at the evening classes. – A fine of 10s was inflicted.
