Express and Echo, 9 Aug 1889. A FATAL ROW NEAR CREDITON
An inquest was held this afternoon at the Lamb Inn, Sandford, before Mr. Deputy Coroner Gould, touching the death of Francis Dally, a mason's labourer and pensioner, a native of the above village, who died on Wednesday last. Elizabeth Brewer identified the body as that of Francis Brewer who lodged with her about two months. Last Monday week he went to Sandford Revel. When he came home he said that there had been a row at the Rose and Crown Inn, and Akers had fallen on him and he had a pain in his stomach. He did not attribute any blame to Akers. When he came home from the revel he was not sober. He wasa single man and worked as a mason's labourer. James Dally, a brother of the deceased, said that at the time he lodged with him his health was generally good. He had heard him complain of pains in his stomach, and had known him wear plaster for it. Yt was caused, he thought, when he took cold. He last saw him alive on Wednesday morning last. He was about forty-five-years-of-age. William Akers said the deceased was at work with him on Wednesday last, at Sandford, cleaning out a well. After leaving work in the evening he was engaged with witness in removing a ladder. On putting down the lader, witness observed blood coming from his mouth. Witness called for assistance and several people came. They sat him on a chair and within a few minutes he died. On the Monday and Tuesday deceased had made no complaint. On the previous Wednesday witness and deceased were at the Rose and Crown together. They went out in the wrestling ring and played a friendly match together. They were good friends and never had an angry word with each other in their lives. They collared each other, and deceased in falling brought witness down with him. He did not however complain of being hurt. The afterwards drank together. Deceased and a mannamed Delve had a row afterwards, and blows were exchanged, but he did not complain of being hurt. Witness came home with him the same night. The next morning he came to work and complained that he did not feel well. Witness advised him to go for a doctor. Witness had seen him spit up blood. He left and went home, and witness did not see him again until Sunday. Edwin Maunsdon, of Sandford, said he saw the deceased at the Rose and Crown Inn on Wednesday week last. Deceased struck a man named Delve, and the latter retaliated. They fought two or three rounds, and then the deceased said, "I have had enough." Delve struck him twice afterwards, and the deceased, Delve and Akers all fell on the ground together. As near as he could observe, the decease was under. -- Dr. Edwards, of Crediton, proved seeing the dead body of the deceased on the 7th inst. at his lodgings. The body appeared bloodless. Witness went to the spot where he fell down, and there he saw sufficient blood to satisfy him as to the cause of death. There were no marks of violence on the body. He attributed death to the rupture of a large blood vessel. -- The jury returned a verdict of "Deatrh from Natural Causes."
