Bert Pickett was said to have been a great character. Never straying from the village and with a great interest in natural history.In 1917 there was a report in the Parish Magazine saying that " A fine specimen of the Unicorn Hawk Moth measuring about five inches had been found in the village by Bert Pickett. It is very rare in England and only flies at night"

 

When Bert retired he moved to a cottage next door to The Star Inn where he lived until his death in 1949.⁷
