Obituary in the Sandford section of the Church Magazine read" After some three weeks severe illness from bronchitis and heart trouble, Mr.Lewis Wright, one of the oldest and best known residents in the parish passed from us on the evening of Ascension Day at his home in the village centre. For many years he was a member of the Parish Council and of the Board of Charity Trustees, where he carried out his responsibilities with the utmost regularity and helpfulness, often at the expense of much valuable time and labour. As a machinist and agricultural iron-worker he was known far and near in the days gone by with his business premises at the south entrance to the village. Much sympathy is felt for the widow and the grown up family." |

In 1865 Lewis William Wright went to London for the first time, aged 15
In 1881 Lewis and Mary Martha were at 2 High Street, Crediton.By 1891 he was back in Sandford.
In 1894 Lewis received the third highest vote in the first election of the Parish Council at Sandford. As well as being a Parish Councillor he was on the Board of Sandford Charity Trustees
Kelly's directory of 1889 shows Lewis William Wright as an implement manufacturer, but alongside James Wright - iron founder , West of England iron works, and also there was an entry for R Wright and sons, (established over half a century) machinists and agricultural implement manufacturers agents for all the leading makers, Britannia Iron works, & at New Buildings!
In the 1901 Census the West of England Ironworks seems to be next to the Britannia Ironworks workshop, both adjacent to the Rose and Crown

In Kellys 1910 Directory Mary Martha Wright was listed as blacksmith in Sandford
Kellys for 1914 shows Mrs Mary Martha Wright as Blacksmith. In 1912-1918 Lewis was registered as a voter at the Village, Sandford, joined on the List by Mary Martha in 1918.
In 1861 Mary was with her parents at High Street, Crediton. In 1871 Mary Martha was in Teignmouth with her mother and step father.
