Obituary in the Sandford section of the Church Magazine read" After some three weeks severe illness from bronchitis and heart trouble, Mr.Lewis Wright, one of the oldest and best known residents in the parish passed from us on the evening of Ascension Day at his home in the village centre. For many years he was a member of the Parish Council and of the Board of Charity Trustees, where he carried out his responsibilities with the utmost regularity and helpfulness, often at the expense of much valuable time and labour. As a machinist and agricultural iron-worker he was known far and near in the days gone by with his business premises at the south entrance to the village. Much sympathy is felt for the widow and the grown up family." |

At the 1871 census Harriet Hatting - Ellen's sister, was staying with the family as well as her daughter Harriet Hatting Greenslade
In 1850 James and brother Robert were in partnership. In 1859 the partnership was dissolved and the rivalry between the two branches of the family seem to have started then.
In Whites 1878 Directory entry for Crediton James Wright is "agricultural machine maker and machinist of Exeter Road, Crediton, and Sandford".
In the Sandford entry he is listed as "ag.imp.maker, general smith and machinist etc, West of England Iron Works + branch Crediton"
At the 1881 Census the address was Smiths Shop - near Snows, and James was machinist and farmer employing 12 men and two boys.
In 1889 Kellys Lewis William Wright appears an implement manufacturer, but alongside James Wright - iron founder , West of England Iron Works.
In 1902 Kellys the entry read Wright M.M. (late James Wright) machinist, agricultural implement maker, wheelwright.
James died at work at the West of England Ironworks.
