Diary note - James Wright Jnr. son of James and Ellen Wright injured his eye in a field near Trowbridge, Crediton occupied by John Carthew August 4 1866.
MMB has made a diary note against March 28 in John Pickett's daybooks. - James Wright-first accident took place 1891 at Sir John Shelley sawmills Shobrooke Park.
By 1891 seems to have moved to Crediton, North Street, married and at census time his mother was living with them. This was within one week of his accident, and no doubt she was assisting with his care.
James left Crediton for Middlesborough on August 23rd 1896 to reside with his wife, according to a note in MMB's diary
At 1901 he was a widower living in Yorkshire with his wife's family.14

SHOCKING ACCIDENT NEAR CREDITON
James Wright, second son of of Mr. James Wright of the West of England Iron Works, Sandford, near Crediton, met with a shocking accident on Saturday whilst engaged at his work. It appears that Mr. Wright was fixing steam saws at the saw mill, belonging to Sir John Shelley, of Shobrook Park, at the carpentry works near the Park. The saws having been properly placed were put in motion, and the unfortunate man stooped to see how they were going, and on lifting his head it came into contact with the saw, being lacerated in such a frightful manner across the front that it laid bare the brain. He was at once conveyed to his home at Crediton, and Drs Powne and Boddy were soon in attendance. Dr. Bell, of Exeter, was also summoned by telegram, and arrived as quickly as possible, and pronounced it a most critical case. He also stated that there was not the slightest chance of the unfortunate man's recovery. Much sympathy is expressed for the poor fellow, who is much respected.
From the Heard website
"His sister-in-law noted in her diary " James Wright - first accident took place at Sir John Shelley's sawmills, Shobrooke Park". She had noted it some years after the event, perhaps on the occasion of a second accident of some description. But in fact accident-prone James had injured his eye in an earlier accident in 1866.
Despite the apparently horrific nature of this injury, James somehow survived. The census was held a week after the accident, and James was with his wife in Crediton, his mother also there, presumably helping to care for him.
In fact James outlived his first wife, having moved to Yorkshire with her to live and work. He married again in 1903. He died in 1909. Strangely there was no mention of this accident in subsequent Wright generations, perhaps because he died before the birth of any nephews and nieces."
In 1891 Eliza was looking after the family store. In 1902 Kellys Miss Eliza Pickett was described as Grocer, Draper and Post Office. In 1911 Eliza, married, and then widowed, was still proprietor of the Post Office/Shop at Sandford. Millicent Jackman, 15, was her servant.
