Note on Husband: William Thomas HEARD
William Thomas Heard was born in Barry, South Wales on the 20 October 1915 the eldest son of Walter John Heard and Sarah Jane Lynes. Shortly after the family returned to Devon to live. Uncle Bill, as I knew him told me his Grandfather, Thomas Heard was a very strict man and lived by the bible. When my grandparents separated Uncle Bill was already out working as a farm servant and stayed in Devon. My mother was 5 years old before she saw her eldest brother. At 18 William joined the 1st battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment and saw service in India where he met and married an Anglo- Indian girl, Ena Linnet Wilson on 1 February 1938 in Bangalore. Together they had 5 sons and 1 daughter. Four of the children born in India. After the Japanese entered the war , Ena and her 4 children were sent to England where they would be safe. They arrived Liverpool on the 5 Nov 1943 and went to stay with my Grandmother in Grendon, Warwickshire before moving on to Devon. Uncle Bill continued in the army long after the war, although he came out and couldn't settle and joined the REME as a drill sergeant. By now the marriage had broken down and he and Ena were divorced and Uncle Bill remarried. When he finally left the army he became a caretaker at a girl's school where he was very popular. He never learnt to drive and is remembered for his motor cycle and later his Reliant Robin. He was a teller of many good stories but I sadly paid little attention and that is something I now regret. He died in 2003 in Exeter and is buried in Topsham.
