Note on Wife: Noreen Beatrice HEARD

From daughter Norina. Today 16 July 2020 is a day that will be forever in my memory. It's the day I said my final goodbye to my Mum surrounded by other members of her family. As well as sharing these photos I thought you may like to read the eulogy I put together for today's funeral.

Noreen Beatrice Cox

Noreen was born on the 5 February 1930 in Payhembury near Ottery St Mary in Devon, the youngest daughter of Sarah Jane Lynes of Botts Green, Warwickshire and Walter John Heard of Sandford in Devon. She was one of 12 children of Sarah’s having 4 elder sisters and 7 brothers, 4 older and 3 younger. She was a sickly baby and was in the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital when her parents separated and her mother and siblings moved to Rushy Flanders near Nether Whitacre in Warwickshire. Noreen was transferred to the Children’s hospital in Birmingham and subsequently returned to her mother by a nurse uttering “Take this home, do as you will”, she was not expected to survive. Noreen had the last laugh living until she was 90 and outliving all her siblings.

Noreen went to school in Nether Whitacre until she was 7 years old when the family moved to Grendon and remained throughout the war. Leaving school at Atherstone aged 14 she was employed as domestic and mother’s help by the Stafford family (Hat Makers of Atherstone) at Witherley. She had 3 charges and in 2015 she was reunited with Tony Stafford and his two sisters and their families, which was enjoyed by all.

After the war Noreen moved to Shustoke,as her mother had re-married. She then found a position with Dennis Prosser at Blythe Mill near Coleshill, and whilst there she met Kenneth, her future husband. Noreen had a slight mishap with her bicycle and who should come cycling along the road and come to her rescue, young railway worker Kenneth Cox.They married at St Cuthbert’s Church in Shustoke on 16 August 1952 and moved into Birchfield’s Cottage in Dingle Lane in Nether Whitacre. In 1960 Noreen, Ken and daughter Norina, born in 1954 ,moved to their first council home in Shustoke. In 1962 their son Alan was born. In 1978 Noreen and Ken returned to live in Whitacre, in Middle Lane. Sadly Ken died suddenly in 1981.Twenty two years ago Noreen and Alan moved to Dosthill.

Noreen always worked fitting her work around her family. For many years she worked as a “daily” for local families. Then she became a dinner lady at Shustoke School and later worked as a children’s escort for Solihull Council, transporting disabled children to special schools,a position she held until she retired when she was 65.

She enjoyed and took pride in her garden and loved reading, until she lost her sight, and she knitted work socks for both Ken and Alan, and her own dishcloths. She liked to listen to the radio and watched television as well as she was able in her later years. Despite her health problems in recent years Noreen kept herself active, pottering in the garden, cooking and other household duties.

Noreen leaves behind her daughter, Norina, her son Alan, two granddaughters, Michelle and Joanne, two grandsons, David and Christopher, several great grandchildren and a second great granddaughter Lovis.
